Your Business Risk Review

30 minutes. No jargon. No obligation. Here's what we look at:

  • What could actually shut your business down — and what it would cost
  • Gaps in your current policies (the fine print nobody explained)
  • Cheap fixes that prevent claims before they happen
  • Whether you're overpaying — or dangerously underinsured

You leave with a one-page picture of your risks — whether or not you ever buy a policy from us.

Who we serve

Built for the businesses that build North Carolina.

We specialize where we can genuinely win for you — deep carrier options, fair pricing, and coverage we can explain in one sitting.

Trades and contractors

Trades & contractors

Electricians, plumbers, HVAC, painters, remodelers, landscapers. One relationship covers the whole operation: liability, workers' comp, tools, trucks, bonds, and builders risk for the bigger jobs.

Professional and tech services

Professional & tech services

Consultants, IT firms, agencies, engineers, accountants. Your biggest risks aren't slips and falls — they're a client claiming your work cost them money, and a hacked inbox. We cover both.

Professional Liability (E&O) · Cyber · BOP Get a professional services review →
Business-owner households

Business-owner households

You've built something worth protecting at home, too. For our business clients, we review the personal gaps most agents skip: flood, umbrella liability, rental properties, boats, and valuables.

Coverage, in plain English

Every policy explained in one honest sentence.

If we can't explain it simply, we haven't earned the right to sell it to you.

Business Owner's Policy (BOP)

The starter bundle: your property, general liability, and lost income if a covered event shuts you down.

General Liability

Someone gets hurt or their property gets damaged because of your business — this responds.

Workers' Compensation

Generally required in NC at three or more employees. Covers injured workers — and protects you from the lawsuit instead.

Professional Liability (E&O)

A client says your work, advice, or mistake cost them money. General liability won't respond — this will.

Cyber Liability

Hacked email, ransomware, a fake invoice with one changed digit. Small businesses are the #1 target now.

Commercial Property

Your building, equipment, and inventory — insured at what it costs to rebuild today, not what you paid years ago.

Builders Risk

Covers the structure and materials while a project is under construction — before the permanent policy takes over.

Commercial Auto

Your work trucks and vans — because a personal auto policy often stops paying the moment the trip is for business.

Surety Bonds

License, permit, and contract bonds — the paperwork that lets contractors bid, build, and get paid.

Commercial Umbrella

Extra liability protection over your other policies — for the claim that's bigger than anyone planned for.

The household gap review — for our business clients

Most business owners have a personal agent who never asked these questions. We do — and you don't have to move your home or auto policies to fix the gaps.

Flood Insurance

Flood is excluded from homeowners policies. In North Carolina, that gap matters. We have six markets for it.

Personal Umbrella

You've built success worth suing over. An umbrella adds $1M+ of protection — often for a few hundred dollars a year.

Landlord & Rental Property

Own a rental or two? Homeowners insurance isn't built for tenants. Landlord policies are — and we place them daily.

Boats, Classics & Valuables

The boat, the '68 you restored, the ring — specialty coverage for the things standard policies shortchange.

Don't see your situation? With 50+ carrier relationships across standard, specialty, and surplus lines, chances are we can place it — or we'll tell you straight who can. That honesty is the whole point of being independent.
How we work

Risk advisory first. Brokerage second.

Most agencies start with a quote. We start with your risks — because the cheapest claim is the one that never happens.

Review

We sit down for 30 minutes and map what could actually hurt your business — in plain English, with no obligation. You get a one-page risk picture either way.

Reduce

Some risks shouldn't be insured — they should be prevented. We show you the practical, affordable fixes first: the $200 sensor that prevents the $20,000 claim.

Insure

For what's left — the risks you can't prevent — we shop 50+ carriers and build coverage you understand, at limits that will actually pay when it counts.

And when a claim happens, you call us first.

We know how claims get paid — and how they get denied. When something goes wrong, we work the claim with you instead of leaving you alone with an 800 number.

RISKEN® Insurance Advisors

Need more than policies? Borrow our risk department.

Growing businesses hit a stage where risk gets complicated — contracts, certificates, multiple locations, bigger clients with bigger requirements — but a full-time risk manager isn't in the budget. That's where our advisory practice comes in.

  • Annual risk assessments and insurance program design
  • Contract insurance requirements and certificate reviews
  • Claims preparedness, documentation, and advocacy
  • Fractional risk-manager support as you grow

Thirty minutes. Zero jargon. Zero pressure.

Worst case: you finally understand your own policies. Best case: we catch the gap before it costs you. Either way, the risk review is free and the one-page summary is yours to keep.

About us

A family agency with an unusual origin story.

RISKEN® Insurance Advisors is family-owned, headquartered in the Raleigh–Durham area, and serving all of North Carolina. Our founders have spent 25+ years inside the insurance world — building analytics for global insurers, adjusting claims, and advising the industry's largest carriers on how they price and pay risk.

We started this agency because we saw the same thing over and over: good people paying real premiums for policies they didn't understand, discovering the gaps only after the loss. Nobody in the chain was truly on the customer's side. So we built the agency we wished existed — one that teaches first, insures second, and stands next to you on claim day.

We're independent, which means we work for you, not for any single insurance company.

Plain-English policy review
Our purpose

Insurance for local businesses. Simplified. That's the entire story.

RISKEN® is a purpose-driven agency focused on North Carolina's regional markets — with claims advocacy and risk management at the heart of every solution we build.

Local first

We serve the shops, trades, and firms that hold NC's towns together — with advice built for how local businesses actually run.

Advocacy at the core

Risk management before policies. Plain English before jargon. And on claim day, an advocate in your corner — not just an 800 number.

Employment with dignity

Our long-term vision: to grow RISKEN® into an agency that provides meaningful employment to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities — because inclusion isn't a program to us, it's the point.

"We're building an agency our community can be proud of — one that protects local businesses, stands with families on their hardest days, and creates real careers for people too often left out of the workforce."

Common questions

Asked by owners like you.

What does the free risk review actually involve?

Thirty minutes, in person or by video. We walk through your operations, your current policies if you have them, and the risks that could genuinely hurt you. You leave with a one-page summary of what to prevent, what to accept, and what to insure. There's no obligation to buy anything.

Do I have to switch everything to you?

No. Plenty of clients start with one gap — a flood policy, an umbrella, a bond, a cyber policy — without moving anything else. We'd rather earn the rest of your business over time than pressure you on day one.

How do you get paid?

Like most independent agencies, we're paid commissions by the carriers when we place your coverage — at no extra cost to you versus going direct. Where we differ is what we do for it: the risk review, plain-English explanations, and claims advocacy are part of the relationship, not an upsell. Advisory engagements beyond brokerage are quoted as fixed fees, agreed in writing before any work starts.

When is workers' compensation required in North Carolina?

Generally, NC businesses with three or more employees are required to carry workers' compensation, and the details (who counts as an employee, contractor rules, industry exceptions) trip up a lot of growing businesses. If you're near that line — or using 1099 subcontractors — it's worth a conversation before the state or an injury decides it for you.

My business is unusual. Can you even place it?

Probably. Beyond our standard markets we have specialty and surplus-lines access for harder-to-place risks — vacant properties, new ventures, unusual classes. And if we genuinely can't help, we'll say so and point you to someone who can.
